1930 First Prize Sandwich
Mar 14, 2023My husband gifted me five beautiful vintage cookbooks. We’re having so much fun cooking out of them and learning about the previous owners of them. One of the books, ‘The Art of Cooking and Serving’ by Sarah Field Splint had several recipes that had been clipped out of the newspapers of the time. On one, there was a list of prize-winning sandwiches. I decided to try the first prize sandwich. The recipe was written and submitted by a Mrs. Howard Livingston and was simply called the ‘Holiday Sandwich’. We made it on a recent video which you can find below, and it was delicious! I have added a photo of the original recipe for you here.
I am honoured to carry on the memory of these women and I’m grateful to be able to share their stories with you.
After I had shared about the recipe several of my subscribers did some digging and found some more information for us about our lovely, Mrs. Livingston.

The “Nyal Cook Book”, 1916 was at one time owned by Eva Jipson. Eva’s husband, Dan, gave her the cookbook in the summer of 1917.
We know, thanks to Jill, that there was an Eva Montena, born 1885 who, in 1906, married a Dan Jipson in Madison, NY. In the 1910 US Census, they had two kids, Frank and Minnie. By the 1915 NY census, they had added a lil boy, Dan L. A daughter Verda(?) who was born around 1916, and a daughter Thelma was born in April 1918. (Lil Thelma was raised by her Jipson aunt and uncle.) Our Eva passed away in October 1918. I couldn’t find a cause of death. Dan is remarried to Nina according to the 1930 census.
We have made the ‘Chicken Pie, Biscuit Crust’ out of Eva’s cookbook and it was delicious!
